About Us
The
River City Big Band is the most popular jazz big band in the Edmonton
area. Formed in 1995, RCBB has been heard by thousands over the years,
performing in jazz clubs and concert halls, and at community service
events such as music festivals and concerts in support of school system
music education. Many of these performances take place outside
Edmonton: recent successful “road trips” have taken us to Vermillion,
Westlock, Spruce Grove, Fort Saskatchewan, Camrose, and Wetaskiwin.
Special guests who have joined us along the way include Juno award
winners Tommy Banks, PJ Perry, and Bobby Cairns. The band has also
provided accompaniment to featured performers such as Simone, daughter
of jazz great vocalist, Nina Simone.
Although our
repertoire includes classic arrangements of big band music of the last
fifty years, we pride ourselves on programming many original
compositions and arrangements, mainly by trumpeter Allan Gilliland, one
time Composer in Residence with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, and by
the band’s Musical Director Larry Schrum. “Just Friends”, our first
album, is proof of that: Alan and Larry either composed or arranged
every track!
